Identification and occurrence

Psilocybe cubensis is a species also known as Cuban coot, which belongs to the mushroom group. Due to its coprophilousness, it naturally thrives on animal feces. Most often, their colonization takes place on the dung of larger herbivores, making them found around cow, sheep or goat pastures. This is largely due to the low stomach acid content of the feces of these animals, which contributes to facilitated germination. The spores of these fungi prefer humid areas, but can also develop in tropical or subtropical environments. Depending on the variety, Psilocybe cubensis can be found in Ecuador, Colombia, Thailand, Cambodia, India or Argentina, among others. In fact, these mushrooms can be found on virtually all continents, except Antarctica.

Properties and characteristics

Psilocybe cubensis are saprotrophic fungi, so they are classified as adulterous organisms and extract energy from organic remains by breaking them down into simple compounds. At the same time, it is worth remembering that their cultivation is permitted in some countries. This is the case, for example, in Brazil, whose regulations allow for self-cultivation.
