Growing Mushrooms at Home

Growing mushrooms at home is a matter that raises many doubts. This especially concerns various strains of psilocybe cubensis, as they contain substances illegal in Poland. Due to specific restrictions, their possession and sale are also prohibited. Psilocybin and other chemical compounds make home cultivation always illegal. However, the mycelia themselves do not contain illegal substances and can be possessed for collector's purposes.

Is it possible to grow mushrooms at home?

Growing mushrooms at home is not possible in Poland, however, mycology enthusiasts can still learn more about individual varieties of psilocybe cubensis. The condition for legally conducting research and observations is to prevent the development of fruiting bodies, but the mycelium itself does not contain illegal compounds. Collectors and amateurs can gain access to it through grow kits, which we offer in our online store Shroom.it. Such a kit contains substrate and a set of accessories, allowing you to familiarize yourself with various strains of the Cuban psilocybe - e.g. Golden Teacher, Ecuadorian, McKenaii, Jack Frost, Malabar, Thai, B+, Colombian, Cambodian, Mexican or Mazatapec.

Biological and physical characteristics

The biological structure of hallucinogenic mushrooms makes them very interesting for mycologists. Their characteristic physical features include a wide, conical cap with an oval or bell-like shape. Its size increases as it reaches subsequent developmental phases. An important element of psilocybe cubensis is also the veil with a bumpy surface, whose brown-white shade gently transitions to a blue-green or grayish color. The spore prints of these mushrooms are smooth and thick-walled, and their coloration is deep dark brown or almost black. Their specific features also include gills, which are characteristically attached and clearly stand out from the surface of the cap. The stem of psilocybin mushrooms is usually thin and dry. There is a delicate ring on the stipe, which may slightly change color during the spore-dropping period.

Development in the natural environment

Mushrooms containing psilocybin usually grow on pastures of large herbivorous mammals, such as cows, goats, or sheep. The Cuban psilocybe is coprophilous, meaning it's adapted to develop in animal feces. The low content of gastric acids in dung is crucial for their existence, ensuring efficient and rapid germination. Mushrooms of this type are mainly found on fairly moist routes. In nature, they also occur in tropical or subtropical areas, and depending on the variety, they can be observed in Colombia, Cambodia, Thailand, Argentina, Ecuador, or India. In our online store, you will also find interesting plant seeds from various regions of the world.

Is growing mushrooms at home prohibited worldwide?

Growing mushrooms at home is illegal both in Poland and other European Union countries. Cultivation cannot be carried out on your own in many other countries around the world either. In some regions, regulations are less restrictive, allowing for the possession and production of psilocybin. In practice,
