Peyote

Peyote is a specific cactus that arouses great interest due to its psychoactive properties. Lophophora williamsii is a stemmed and spineless species, also known as Williams' cactus or button cactus. This perennial plant originates from the desert regions of Texas and Mexico, and most commonly occurs on clay and limestone soils. The characteristic features of this cactus include its pink or yellowish flowers, which open during the day and somewhat resemble those of prickly pear.

What characteristics does Peyote have?

Peyote is a cactus that continues to enjoy great popularity among ethnobotany enthusiasts. This is largely due to its content of certain specific alkaloids, such as mescaline with psychoactive properties. This cactus grows from seeds, which can be found in the offer of our online store Shroom.it. It's worth remembering that in Poland, Lophophora williamsii is used exclusively for research and collection purposes. This perennial should not be cultivated for obtaining mescaline unless it is legal in a given country. Peyote grows wild in the United States, where it is strictly protected.

History and occurrence

This cactus has a name derived from the Nahuatl language, which in direct translation refers to something flickering or shimmering. Lophophora williamsii is a species known for centuries, and its cultural and religious significance is particularly important for the indigenous people of America. Currently, only representatives of tribes have the right to use this succulent, who can obtain and use it in various ceremonies. For them, Peyote is a way to integrate with spirituality and also serves as magical protection against evil forces. In some cultures, Peyote was not always directly consumed, as it was often treated as an amulet. Lophophora williamsii also played a role in some branches of Christianity. The cactus was taken in the form of a sacrament aimed at healing the spirit.

Physical and developmental parameters

Upon reaching maturity, Peyote gains a characteristically flattened, slightly spherical shape. The cactus is distinguished by fleshy skin and a specific, ribbed division. The age of the succulent affects the increased visibility of surface lines. Lophophora williamsii may also have spiral grooves, which often take on unique forms. The plant is characterized by a stem that in natural conditions grows to a length of about 20 cm and an average of 6 cm in cultivation. One of its characteristic features is very slow growth, as annual increases usually do not exceed 1 cm. Also noteworthy are the specific flowers, which have ornamental value and usually appear only after several years. After flowering, Peyote also produces fruits.

What is Peyote used for?

Peyote gained popularity and cultural recognition due to its unique properties, which have been used for centuries to induce ecstatic states or hallucinations. The mescaline contained in the cactus strongly affects consciousness and leads to a number of specific tactile, auditory, or olfactory experiences. This alkaloid also affects the perception of time. In most cultures, Peyote was consumed in the form of an infusion based on dried cactus. The wild plant was also eaten in ground or raw form. Currently, mescaline is classified as a highly psychoactive substance, therefore its use remains illegal in Poland and many other countries.

Psychoactive properties

The experiences associated with taking mescaline contained in Peyote are determined by several factors, such as the amount and purity of the substance, consumption circumstances, or the individual's state. Indigenous tribes used Peyote mainly for specific rituals, while in modern times it has gained recreational use. This cactus gained particular popularity in the 20th century when famous artists began to reach for it. In Poland, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, or Witkacy, talked about his experiences with Peyote
