Discovery and origin
Mazatapec is one of the Mexican strains of psilocybe cubensis. These mushrooms originate from the area around the city of the same name, and their discovery is attributed to Gordon Wasson and Allan Richardson. These travelers participated in the rituals of the Mazatec tribe, indigenous people inhabiting the Oaxaca mountains. The natives used the mushrooms mainly for spiritual purposes. Maria Sabina, a shaman who performed a healing ritual known as Velada, gained particular fame. This ceremony involves keeping vigil over a sick person and has been known since pre-colonial times. The method of treatment involves administering psilocybin mushrooms. This rite somewhat resembles a Eucharistic agape and takes place at night, usually in a place away from people. Velada is initiated for either one or several people. During the ritual, there is rhythmic chanting and clapping, accompanied by the ceremonial ingestion of mushrooms on an empty stomach. The climax occurs when the sick person experiences visual and auditory hallucinations while maintaining consciousness and identity. Wasson and Richardson were among the first Western citizens who could participate in this ritual.
