Hallucinogenic mushroom spores

Spores of hallucinogenic mushrooms function as their reproductive cells, which in natural environments develop in closed structures and burst upon reaching maturity. Consequently, they are released outside, allowing them to be dispersed by water, wind, or living organisms. Hallucinogenic mushrooms primarily include varieties of Psilocybe cubensis, also known as the Cuban psilocybe. Their spores differ from each other in various parameters and growth conditions.

How can you recognize hallucinogenic mushroom spores?

Hallucinogenic mushroom spores do not differ significantly from the reproductive cells of other species. In the case of psilocybe cubensis, they take the form of single-cell structures with an ellipsoidal or elongated shape. However, these spores have specific microscopic features that allow for the identification of individual hallucinogenic varieties. Their cultivation in Poland is prohibited due to the presence of a psychoactive substance called psilocybin. This substance is not present in the mycelium of psilocybe cubensis, so mycologists and researchers can safely possess it and conduct microbiological observations. Grow kits with various strains of this species can be found in our online store Shroom.it, and their possession is fully legal as long as fruiting bodies are not produced. The same applies to vials with liquid mycelium culture.

Living conditions

Hallucinogenic mushrooms of the psilocybe cubensis species belong to the agaric family and are coprophilous, meaning they naturally inhabit animal dung. Their colonization often occurs in areas occupied by pastures of large herbivores, such as cows, goats, and sheep. The spores of this variety develop in animal feces because the low content of stomach acids accelerates and facilitates the germination process. These mushrooms are mainly found in humid areas but are also encountered in subtropical and tropical zones. Depending on the variety, mushrooms of this species have been recorded in countries such as Thailand, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and India. In practice, psilocybe cubensis can grow on every continent except Antarctica.

Characteristic features

While the spores of psilocybe cubensis themselves do not have many distinctive features, fully developed hallucinogenic mushrooms can be identified based on several parameters. These mushrooms belong to the group of saprotrophic heterotrophs, which can obtain energy by breaking down organic remains into simple compounds. In the case of individual varieties, the mycelium is distinctly rhizomorphic. Our online store Shroom.it offers grow kits of many of them, including popular variants such as Malabar, Golden Teacher, Mazatapec, B+, Ecuadorian, McKennaii, Thai, Cambodian, Mexican, and Colombian. The spores of these varieties usually have a dark brown color, as well as thick-walled and smooth prints. Upon reaching maturity, psilocybe cubensis is characterized by a bumpy surface of the veil. There is a thin ring on the stem that darkens as reproductive cells fall.
